The LUMIX S5 Announced Today!

Well, the day is finally here…. And it’s Perfect!

The new Full Frame #LUMIXS5 was released to the public and I can’t be more delighted! I’ve had the immense pleasure of shooting with it for a couple weeks and, oh my, it’s great to have the quality and clarity and depth of field of the full frame sensor and only need to carry a small-sized body! The body is literally the size of a Micro 4/3 sensor #LumixGH5!!  Here is a comparison shot with the LUMIXS1, LUMIX S5, and LUMIXGH5. The amazing thing is how small the S5 is—literally the same size as the GH5!

Now let me be clear—it’s not ALL about the body. I am fully aware that the L-Mount lenses for the full frame sensors are quite a bit bigger and heavier than the G-series lenses. And a full selection of Full Frame lenses amounts to some weight, BUT, the latest unique 20-60mm Kit Lens that comes with the LUMIXS5 is very light and boasts a flexible and useful zoom range!

I actually did a full series of images for the launch of that lens a couple of months ago. It is truly a brilliant design- light and a perfect range of focal lengths! Panasonic knocked it out of the park with this awesome combo, perfect for the Micro 4/3 photographer ready to enter the full frame world OR for the Full Frame DSLR photographer to enter the Mirrorless world. Be prepared to be impressed!

Here is my small Tenba Roller bag with the Lumix S1, S5, 16-35mm, 20-60mm and 70-200mm kit. This is the bag I take to weddings and on site for video gigs and still shots alike. [My Tenba M4/3 bag is on my shoulder, with a #LumixG9 and a #Lumix50-200mm on my hip with a SpiderLight Holster.]

I’m delighted with the auto focus, which appears to be as good or better than its predecessors, and Panasonic says it is the best-focusing model they have produced yet. As for portraits, the face, eye, body and animal focus detection ability is a lifesaver—it hits the focus perfectly on the eyes every time. One of those things I can’t live without anymore!

And speaking of things I can’t live without- I have to mention one of my happiest discoveries about the S5—they added the fully articulated monitor!! I love it on all my other G-series cameras and have missed it on the S1. This wonderful little feature is like adding the cherry on top!
