Lumix GH5- A first look/try
Well, this past week I had the pleasure of using a GH5 all day in the WPPI tradeshow, and then took it home for a week and then to Florida to photograph with it for a bit! Finally, after a long wait and much anticipation, it is here. Well, Almost. They actually start shipping the end of March, (in about a month) but the first pre-production models are out and we [the Luminary team] are busy making content with them!
The main thing I want to say is WOW. What a major improvement over its predecessor, the GH4, which was pretty amazing too, but WOW! There are so many new improvements with more to come as it is shipped and then a few more in April and late summer.
My #1 request was honored—so now we can shoot in 4K video and it uses the whole sensor, so no more cropping in when you switch to video! BUT a bigger bonus that that…. Yep- the rumor is true—we can now shoot in 6K video using the full sensor and it gives us a 18 mg file as a still frame out of the video. Just stinkin’ amazing. It’s a #gamechanger for sure. I can’t wait to see how big we can print the files from 6K video….
But here are some really great features I love about the new GH5 and I can’t wait to have it in my hands every day, seeing my world through its lovely eye.
- The 225 point focus that is so incredibly fast and will even follow a subject’s face as they come directly toward the camera. #totallyimpressive
- A totally new AF system that is the industry’s fastest level of auto focusing of approx 0.05 sec and analyzes every single frame. More Info
- 6k and 4k video using full sensor with #nocropping ALSO with VFR (variable frame rate) in all modes for great slow motion in camera!
- Double card slots- YAY! #doubleYay!
- 2 click custom auto bracketing #lovethis
- Fabulous noise reduction in frames pulled from videos since it evaluates noise from adjacent frames and effectively identifies and reduces noise without losing details. #fabnewtechnology
- Correctable (in camera) rolling shutter when photographing fast-moving scenes go by #nomorebentfences
- Much better EVF- so beautiful. Who needs a mirror?
- Newly organized menus, but still in same logical and familiar locations for ease
- More shooting styles [like V-logL and in camera LUTS] and more video tools too #highendvideo …That includes being able to film in 4K/30p in 4:2:2 10-bit IN camera!! #nokidding
- Bluetooth along with the WIFI to be always connected to your mobile device, allowing instant image sharing AND camera controls! #incrediblycool
- Ability to save and reload the entire batch of camera and menu settings. Great for setting up multiple cameras or reloading [menus, color profiles, shooting styles, custom buttons, etc] #ThisisHUGE!
So I am thrilled to be a part of the Luminary Team, and an enthusiastic recipient of a truly capable camera! I do think this camera will be the one to change our industry in a big way. It will effectively replace any DSLR and is living up to Panasonic’s tagline: Changing Photography
