Exchange your Answers for Questions
What do you see in your mind’s eye? When you quiet the mind, rest your eyes and allow visions to pop into your mind, what do you see? Recently I heard an Instagram story by Alicia Keys, where she interviews a Deepak Chopra, a meditation authority. Their conversation was on the topic of thankfulness. In a nutshell, he said to live in a space on Inquiry, not Answers. For example, instead of trying to think up the answer to ‘all the things you are thankful for’, instead, ASK yourself, “what am I grateful for…”. Then just listen. The images will pop into your mind’s eye—your family, your children, a person, a scene etc…and the answers will appear as you focus on living in INQUIRY.
Exchange your answers for Questions, he says. Hmmm. There might be something powerful in there. Our spirit knows… are we asking? or listening?

What an inspiration! As a photographer and creative, I exercise this process all the time, although had never thought of it quite that way. In our process of photographing scenes or objects or just capturing beauty, we all have our “usual” perspective. Literally it it’s the filter of WHO we are, essentially, and is our typical style or visual voice (tinted our perspective as well). We can even look at is as our “rut” or M.O.; perhaps a style, perhaps a stale routine!
Typically, as I am shooting a subject or scene, once I have exhausted all my ideas, I say, “Creator in Me, what do You see?” and I stop and reconsider, I listen, and look for a new perspective. Then, I begin again and photograph more. Invariably I discover a different way to shoot, a different vantage point or concept. I feel it is a way to get out of my own head, or out of my box or just take a new path.
So take a moment and ask yourself: “Creator in Me, what do YOU see?” Listen for a moment. The answers will arrive. And this applies to so much more than photography- it can be your daily practice in life.
Today, focus on the Questions instead of the Answers. Your heart knows the answers, and is just waiting for the right time to share. Are you asking the right questions? Are you listening?
